Who we are
Researchers, patients, healthcare providers, and experts from all over New Mexico who come together to help others understand what rare diseases are and who they affect. Our goal is to bring positive change to New Mexico for all Rare Disease patients so they can have a brighter today and tomorrow through community and connection.

Why Zebras?
Zebras are the symbol of the Rare Disease Patient
People living with Rare Diseases adopted the Zebra as their symbol. This connection derives from an old saying taught in medical schools: "When you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras." This traditional phrase encourages medical providers to consider common conditions first when diagnosing patients. However, for those with rare diseases, their symptoms may underline uncommon conditions that are often overlooked during diagnoses.
The Zebra has become a powerful symbol within the Rare Disease Community. It stands for both the uniqueness of these conditions and the challenges many patients face in receiving proper diagnosis and treatment. Just like a zebra may stand out in a herd of horses, Rare Disease patients may present with symptoms that require looking beyond the common explanations to find answers. One of our goals is to spread awareness in our community and throughout New Mexico. For the last several years UNM has held a special public event for anyone affected or interested in Rare Diseases.
